The phrase ‘something of a character’ is applied to many but it befits none so well as devoted country sports enthusiast Sir Mark Prescott Bt.

His training career since he first took Heath House Stables from his early mentor Jack Waugh in 1970 has been an object lesson in the maxim that if a job is worth doing it is worth doing well. The thoroughness of the Prescott approach bore fruit in the early days with the placement of predominantly modest horses according to their abilities at ordinary tracks with journey up the up A1 to Catterick being particularly familiar to horse box drivers with a ‘Prescott cargo’.

The enduring of a relationship with long time stable jockey George Duffield came to be seen as the epitome of stability with the pair always on the same wavelength whilst maintaining suitable professional distance. There seemed a point in the arc of his training career when his ability to fashion success with horses of limited talent would become self sustaining, but from the mid 1990s onwards the increased patronage of breeding leviathans such as Cheveley Park and Lanwades Stud (in the person of Kirsten Rausing) brought the profile and step up in quality that many rightly regarded as Sir Mark’s just reward.

The success of Pivotal (later to become a ’superstar’ stallion) in the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and subsequent victory in the same year’s renewal of York’s Nunthorpe Stakes ushered in a period of sustain success at the top level with Alborada winning the Nassau and the Champion Stakes (twice in 1998 and 1999) with the Group One Goodwood summer showpiece also being captured by her dam’s half sister Last Second.

The victory of Hooray in the 2010 Cheveley Park attested Sir Mark’s ability to train a high class two year old and a reminder for those who had not been around for the remarkable career of tough as teak juvenile Spindrifter who won a remarkable thirteen races in 1980 thanks to Sir Mark’s intimate knowledge of the entry system and the then prevailing penalty structure. As one might expect for such a meticulous operator, placing of horses for prestige handicaps is a speciality at Heath House with 1988 Cambridgeshire Quinlan Terry being but one example, amongst many, of the art.

There was something of a hiatus for group winners at the top level amongst older horses at Group One level after the victory of Confidential Lady in the French Oaks in 2006, but the recent victories of stop class sprint filly Marsha in the 2016 Prix De L’Abbaye and in the 2017 Nunthorpe have served as conclusive proof that the ‘magic’ remains intact.

One of the surprising features of Heath House life in recent times has been the embrace of social media. This once assumed to be wholly implausible development has taken place under of William Butler who Sir Mark’s designated successor. Those who naively assumed they get a direct route to the workings of ‘the Master’s Mind’ will be inevitably disappointed upon inspection of the output, but as a public face of the operation it keeps public interest up to a suitable level.

There are clearly many more years of training behind Mark Prescott than in front of him, but his succession is in place. It is hard, however, not to reflect that after the fashion of Shakespeare in the person of Hamlet that ‘we shall not see his like again.’ IN the meantime, however, the winners continue to flow ...
