PETER CHAPPLE-Hyam is a multiple Classic-winning trainer, who added a second Derby victory to his CV thanks to the brilliance of Authorized in 2007.

The stunning five-length triumph at Epsom gave Chapple-Hyam a thrilling day in what has been a glittering career.

Just as they had before Authorized’s golden triumph, the big-race successes have continued to come for Newmarket-based Chapple-Hyam.

Sayif, Monitor Closely and Morana have all added Group race wins since and, although 2011 was a comparatively low-key season for Chapple-Hyam, he still enjoyed notable successes with Crying Lightening, My Propeller and Chunky Diamond. Caravan Rolls On was the winner of four of his seven starts in 2011 and he looks an exciting staying prospect for next season.

Chapple-Hyam enjoyed a good season with his juveniles in 2011 with 33% of those that hit the race-track winning. The team so nearly celebrated a Group 1 success when Sunday Times went down narrowly in the Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket. The daughter of Holy Roman Emperor remains in training and she is just one of a number of good prospects for the yard.

Since Peter chalked up two Group 1 successes in his rookie season as a trainer in 1991, he has gone on to win many of the biggest prizes racing has to offer.

In that first year with a licence, he made a huge initial impression on the sport with Rodrigo Di Triano and Dr Devious blazing a trail for his Manton-based operation.

Chapple-Hyam, previously assistant to Barry Hills, had just 23 horses under his care. But Rodrigo Di Triano would provide him with a top-level success in the Middle Park Stakes and then just weeks later Dr Devious struck in the Dewhurst.

In an extraordinarily rapid rise to the top of racing’s tree, the following season would bring even greater success through Classic victories.

Rodrigo Di Triano landed the 2,000 Guineas before his fellow stable-mate Dr Devious secured racing’s most coveted prize – a glorious Derby win.

Both of Chapple-Hyam’s star charges would continue to triumph at the highest level that memorable term as races such as the Irish 2,000 Guineas, the Irish Champion Stakes and the Juddmonte were won.

Throughout the 1990s – as Chapple-Hyam’s string stretched to upward of 100 one year – the Group 1 and Classic victories kept coming.

Horses such as Spectrum, Turtle Island, Victory Note, Revoque, Single Empire and Commander Collins kept him at the forefront of the training ranks.

But not long after Shining Hour’s glowing performance in the Queen Mary presented him with another Royal Ascot success, Chapple-Hyam opted for a new adventure in Hong Kong.

Four years were spent training in the Far East before the lure of British racing persuaded him to return.

Touching down in Newmarket ahead of the 2004 season, Chapple-Hyam moved into St Gatien, close to the famous Warren Hill gallops. The decision to come back was quickly vindicated as he registered five Group wins in the campaign.

There were more Stakes victories in 2005 but it was 2006 that underlined that Chapple-Hyam was back in a big way.

Dutch Art was the major stable star as he recorded two Group 1 victories and a Royal Ascot win in an unbeaten juvenile campaign. Authorized brought the curtain down on a superb season with victory in the Racing Post Trophy.

The 2007 term brought more victories on the sport’s grandest stages with Tariq and Winker Watson admirably flanking the coruscating achievements of Derby and Juddmonte International hero Authorized.

In recent years the task of keeping up the quality of a small string in the ultra competitive ranks of Newmarket trainers has proved exacting. Nevertheless, Peter’s skill with talented by quirky performers such as Arod bears testimony to his enduring affinity with the thoroughbred.
