Henry Spiller was former assistant in the US to Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor. He recently fulfilled his dream to take out a licence and became the latest recruit to join the Newmarket training ranks. Born in 1985 in Newmarket, his family moved to County Kildare in Ireland when he was four years old and this is where Henry calls home. He stems from a family heavily involved in racing; his grandparents were responsible for 1949 Welsh National winner Fighting Line, who was ridden by the famous jockey turned author Dick Francis. His father Charles spent 29 years as Darley’s pedigree expert and his mother worked as secretary to Clive Brittain and also rode in point-to-points.

Henry started working for Jeremy Harley at the Curragh during his school holidays and his passion for the sport was such that he left school to work full-time for leading Irish trainer John Oxx. Two and a half years later he left Currabeg Stables and headed east to Dubai and worked the winter for Kieran McLoughlin, who trained for Sheikh Mohammed and his brother Sheikh Hamdan in the US, and Dubai, before heading across the Atlantic to McLoughlin’s Saratoga base for a year.

Continuing to gain experience around the world, Henry became Pupil Assistant to Tony McEvoy at Lindsay Park in Australia for five months. He then went on to start an eleven-year period with Godolphin, initially in Dubai, then Newmarket. He was offered a position in America, where he worked for seven years as assistant to bin Suroor, and was responsible for Gr.1 winners such as Discreet Cat, Gayego and Girolamo. When the US operation closed down in 2012, Henry returned to Newmarket and took up the position of head lad in the two-year-old barn, as he set in motion the plans to take out his own licence.

Henry struck on his own in with a couple of winners in 2015. Since October 2016 he has been based at Savile House Stables in the heart of Newmarket. 2018 sees Henry in his third full season and his tally of winners is on a pleasingly upward trajectory year after year. He harbours an ambition to train a winner at Royal Ascot having got a recent taste for the meeting when bargain buy filly Daphinia contested the latest renewal of the Queen Mary Stakes. Leader Writer is the best horse Henry has trained thus far. He was acquired from French trainer Henri Pantall in July 2017 and went on to win a valuable handicap at Ascot in September that year. Henry’s adoption of the latest techniques and his ready and willing communication with owners make him a coming force in the Newmarket training ranks
