As preparation for a training career it is hard to imagine a better grounding than spending two decades at the heart of Sheikh Mohammed’s gargantuan training operation.

Before his prolonged spell in bloodstock management, Crisford had learned plenty as an assistant to two masters of the training profession in the shape of the late John Dunlop and the perennially successful Sir Mark Prescott. From modest beginnings in 2015 renting boxes from Clive Brittain matters have moved on swiftly and as the 2019 turf flat season commences has well over 100 horses in his charge with more than 40 two year olds in his Kremlin House yard. At the outset of his new career Crisford used the experience he had gained in observing large training operations in action to reinforce his team with the appropriate staff. His realisation that the recruitment and retention of quality staff are logically prior to acquisition of horses has served him well. As well as getting this aspect in good order, the fledgling trainer’s ability to use advice from experienced quarters, most notably that provided by the late British Racing School Chief Executive Rory MacDonald, again helped enormously.

The yard is also in a fortunate position of being a family run affair as trainer’s son Edward is ensconced in the role of assistant having gained valuable experience in California with Eoin Harty and in a spell with John Gosden. As one might expect in business where little is left to chance, there is a succession plan for Crisford junior to take over the yard in the medium to long term.

The thought of starting a new career in his fifties did nothing to faze Crisford and his profile in the bloodstock industry was a huge bonus in getting the right kind of horses on board from an early stage. Such connections are particularly useful in getting owner breeders to commit and these patrons are much more heavily invested in the progress of their charges as they can afford to take a holistic view of the whole cycle.

As an illustration of this, 2018 saw the emergence of a trio of ‘breakout horses’ that every yard needs. Emblematic of the benefit of cultivating owner breeders was the success of Hamdan Al Maktoum’s Kodiac colt Jash. He was the only member of the field to give Aidan O ‘Brien’s hugely talented colt Ten Sovereigns a race in the Middle Park pulling clear of that rival and running well through the line in a manner that speaks well of his chances of seeing out the 2000 Guineas trip notwithstanding the fact that his pedigree suggests he will be at his best over sprint trips. Earlier in the campaign Ostilio’s success in the Britannia Handicap (subsequently successful in a Group 2 event at Longchamp) opened the trainer’s Royal Ascot account and followed hot on the heels of Century Dream’s success in the Diomed Stakes at the Derby meeting.

In late 2018 Crisford implemented a plan to establish a satellite yard in Dubai. This positive development was somewhat overshadowed in early 2019 when the yard, along with a number of other Newmarket establishments, suffered the unwelcome ravages of the equine flu outbreak. The latter troubles notwithstanding, the yard remains very much on the up and further high level success in 2019 and beyond looks as good as assured.
